Born in South Dakota, Elmer Red Starr has been an active potter for almost 30 years. He has won twelve awards from the Santa Fe Indian Market, four of which were for first place in categories such as miniature black sgraffito bowl, sgraffito red bowl, nontraditional, and sgraffito with stones.
Red Starr moved to New Mexico when he met and married Harriet Tafoya. His earliest work was a collaborative effort with his mother-in-law, Cresencia Tafoya, who taught him the traditional pottery methods of the Santa Clara.
Red Starr specializes in images of the natural world which are sacred to his culture etched into traditional black on black Santa Clara pottery. Red Starr signs each of his creations with his name followed by an arrow and his census number.
