Corn Maiden by Nora Yazzie
Nora was born in 1954 to Daniel and Minnie Yazzie of the Navajo Nation in the Four Corners region. Nora's mother taught her how to work in clay however, much of the inspiration for Nora's sculpture and pottery came from watching her grandparents create sand paintings and weave Navajo rugs.
Nora's sculpture and pottery have received wide recognition; winning many awards in New Mexico State Fairs and Totah Festivals. Additionally, her work has been included in Guy Berger and Nancy Schiffer's book, "Pueblo & Navajo Contemporary Pottery." Nora typically signs her work "Nanzebah."
Formed from micaceous clay, this 13.5 inch Corn Maiden sculpture is an elegant representation of the Corn Maiden who, sent by the Great Spirit, taught the people about the life sustaining magic of maize (corn).
